Årsutställning 2017

Årsutställning is the annual exhibition of Malmö Art Academy (KHM), bringing together works developed by the academy’s students throughout the academic year. The 2017 edition brought together different approaches to material, process and the use of personal and found archives.

Tressel
The canvas is stretched on both sides of structures built from MDF previously used as the support of another painting and later covered with clay. Tressel, a name for a structure resting between two supports, is traditionally associated with work trestles and bridge structures.

The work begins with drawings made by me between the ages of three and five. Through silkscreen printing, my drawings were translated into a series of compositions, allowing the imperfections, gaps and transformations introduced by the process of reproduction to become part of the work. The process creates a distance from the original intimacy of the drawings while retaining traces of their initial form.

Herbaria
My great-grandmother had the habit of collecting and drying the plants that grew in her garden. Over the years, this daily practice became a way of cataloguing the flowers that grew around her. Once dried, the plants were arranged into compositions and eventually framed on the walls of her home. Years after her death, one of these compositions came into my possession. Knowing of her practice, I became determined to find the archive from which it had come. In the attic of her former home, I found a pile of old telephone directories. Between their pages, flowers and dried leaves had been preserved over time.
